5 Ways to Cope with Anger

How you can help your child manage their emotions in a healthier way.

Does your child have a bad habit of throwing temper tantrums? Are you getting concerned that they won’t learn how to regulate their emotions in a more socially acceptable way? All children struggle to process feelings effectively—but they don’t have to go through it alone. You can help them learn constructive ways to de-escalate themselves and approach the frustrating situation with a cooler head.

Here are some easy tricks your child can try today:

1. Fidget
For children with anxiety or anger issues, “fidget” objects, such as stress balls, can be a great outlet for pent-up frustration.

2. Retreat
Try providing a soft chair, comforting objects, and a quiet environment where the child can “feel their feelings” in a safe way.

3. Deep breathing
Simply hold, hug, or just stand with the child—then breathe together. You can count breaths or set a timer.

4. Exercise
Dancing, jumping, or playing sports are all excellent ways to de-escalate frustrated feelings.

5. Talking or Writing
Encourage them to talk or write something like: “I feel angry because______.”
In Conclusion
It’s okay to be angry. What’s not okay is hurting yourself or another person—or damaging property. This is where these helpful habits can come in and provide a healthier outlet.
